Frequently Asked Questions – Gas Portfolio Training

Gas portfolio training is a hands-on work experience program required for becoming a Gas Safe registered engineer. It involves working under the supervision of qualified engineers to complete a set number of real-life gas jobs, which are documented as part of your portfolio evidence.

Anyone looking to become a qualified domestic gas engineer in the UK must complete a gas portfolio as part of their ACS (Accredited Certification Scheme) qualification. This includes new entrants to the industry, career changers, or those completing NVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Engineering.

Typically, your portfolio should include a minimum of 30–40 gas jobs across different categories such as boiler installations, servicing, fault finding, gas cooker installations, and safety checks. Each job must be fully documented with photos, engineer sign-off, and job sheets.

It usually takes 3 to 6 months to complete your portfolio, depending on your availability and the number of jobs covered weekly. Our placements are flexible and can be tailored around part-time or weekend availability.

You should have completed your classroom-based gas training or theory modules before starting your portfolio. We accept trainees from most accredited training centres and gas colleges across the UK.

Yes, all our trainees work alongside experienced, Gas Safe registered engineers. You will receive one-to-one guidance and gain experience in real working environments across boiler installations, repairs, gas cookers, and safety checks.

We provide full support including portfolio templates, job documentation guidance, weekly check-ins, and direct communication with your mentor engineer. You’ll also have access to our admin team for help with scheduling and feedback.

Once your portfolio is signed off and verified, you’ll be eligible to book your ACS assessment. Passing this assessment is the final step before registering with the Gas Safe Register and starting work as a qualified gas engineer.

We aim to place you with engineers working in or near your local area. Placement availability may vary by region, but we try to match you with the most suitable mentor based on location, job types, and scheduling preferences.

You can apply directly through our website or contact us via phone or email. Once you register, our team will review your training background and assign you a mentor engineer based on availability and your preferred working schedule.
